David Gibson, Principal of Two Twelve, Recipient of First Ever Material ConneXion Medium Award in Environmental Graphic Design
New York,
NY, May 17, 2007 Material ConneXion honored Two Twelve Principal David
Gibson with the first ever Material ConneXion Medium Award for material excellence
in the category of Environmental Graphic Design at MATTERX, Material ConneXion’s
symposium celebrating ten years of material innovation. Mr. Gibson was one of
three featured speakers on the first day of the symposium, presenting Two Twelve's
creative use of materials in environmental graphic design programs across the
country. The event took place on May 17 and 18 at The Equitable Center.
David Gibson is an internationally recognized and published designer—a pioneer
in the field of public information design. As the co-founder and managing principal
of Two Twelve, David has always believed in the power of design to transform public
space and people’s awareness. His leadership in projects for the Chicago
Park District, the Partnership for Downtown Baltimore, and Sound Transit in Washington
State are just a few examples of his commitment to making the public his most
important client. Whether he is working for a large corporation like General Motors,
a major university like Yale, or a public service institution like Children’s
Hospital Boston, David and his team bring beauty, clarity, and inspiration to
their work in identity and wayfinding and signage systems.
Aware of the importance of sustainability, David has been a strong supporter of
Two Twelve's environmental mission, the company's commitment to "green"
practices within the office and throughout the design process. With Two Twelve's
Green Team, he encourages the creative use of a variety of sustainable practices
and materials in both print and environmental graphic design projects.
David studied architecture at Cornell University before earning his MFA at Yale.
For him, design and architecture are always in dialogue. He was an early proponent
of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and helped develop some of the first
disability-aware design guidelines for the Society for Environmental Graphic Design
(SEGD), for which he has served as both a past president and board member. Additional
to being a current board member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA),
David has attended the AIGA’s Advanced Leadership Summer Program at Harvard
Business School. He keeps in touch with the next generation of design leaders
through speaking engagements around the world, and has taught at Philadelphia’s
University of the Arts and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. A passionate
advocate for his field, David has also served as a consultant to the National
Endowment for the Arts and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Mr. Gibson was nominated for the Medium Award by Joyce Rutter Kaye, Editor in
Chief of PRINT magazine and introduced at the MATTERX award presentation and symposium
by Dorothy Kalins, a contributing editor to Newsweek and formerly of Metropolitan
Home, Saveur and Garden Design magazines.
