Two Twelve was engaged by AIGA Design for Democracy to help develop design guidelines for voter information.
Design for Democracy had begun work with the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) in 2005 to establish national election design guidelines. These included samples for ballot design and polling place voter information materials.
Our firm was part of a national team that worked on templates for optical scan paper ballots, touch screen interface DRE (direct recording electronic device) for touch screen voting, and polling place directional signage and voter information.
Two Twelve was responsible for the layout and production guidelines for all polling place signage in multiple languages. We created and evaluated prototypes and identified usable and accessible best practices for temporary signs.
We explored forms, layouts and typography for directional, information and regulatory sign types; developed samples in English and additional languages; and assisted with the development of best practices data and with the creation of dissemination materials for online distribution. We also researched, created and proposed a sustainable solution for local production and re-use of polling place signage materials.
In July 2007 the EAC accepted AIGA Design for Democracy’s research and best practice recommendations. Guidelines and editable samples were distributed to 6,000 election officials across the country in January 2008. As a result, local jurisdictions now have access to the tools they need to apply sound communication design principles and make voting easier and more accurate for all U.S. citizens.
