The Queen’s Medical Center, a pillar of healthcare in Honolulu, Hawai‘i since 1859, has expanded to meet the needs of its growing community. However, with this growth came a challenge: the complex layout of the hospital made wayfinding difficult for visitors and staff alike. Stepping in swiftly, Two Twelve conducted an expedited analysis and devised a strategic plan within a week. To test the success of our recommendations and to provide immediate impact at a low cost, Two Twelve implemented a full, temporary signage system at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Inspired by Hawai‘i’s lush landscape and rich history that honors the cultural lineage of Queen Emma’s life and legacy, our designs were centered around uniting language with symbols and colors which streamlines navigation for multilingual visitors of all ages and demonstrates a nuanced sense of place. To add a personal touch, we created an icon and color set for elevators that relates specifically to the person the elevator is named for. It helps create a welcoming and comfortable environment for users.
